Edge One – “Xin”

GRIEF/FORGIVENESS – (Drama/Horror) A young woman struggles with the death of her mother, while trying to forgive her less-than-perfect father. Starring Tina Huang, Cici Lau, Karla Mosley and Jim Lau.

“XIN is a deeply personal story to me. I was compelled to write it while I was struggling with grief after my mother’s death. I was so deeply lost and felt so many conflicting emotions: profound sadness, relief, guilt and deep rage. My experience had not lined up with all the things you hear about grief and it’s many stages. Instead, I found myself constantly engaged in a battle to find balance. I was struggling with my mental health.

Out of desperation, I tried therapy and medication, which was life-saving. Seeking help is not something we did in my family and I had a lot of shame about not being able to cope on my own. I had guilt about making art around my experience with my mother and family- that I was somehow exploiting it. Luckily, I had a great therapist, an amazing community and creative partner.

Karla Mosley encouraged me to keep writing and our director Desha Dauchan believed in the piece. We were able to make this film because everyone involved, from cast to crew, could relate to its core and I realized that as artists, we make what we know and the more specific the journey and struggle, the more people you can touch. I hope therapy and seeking help for mental health continue to be destigmatized. Let’s keep talking about it.” —Tina Huang

Edge Two – “Cafe Abundance”

BODY IMAGE – (Comedy) Over lunch, two women take a bold stand after becoming fed up with society’s obsession with calorie-counting and women’s body image.

“CAFE ABUNDANCE was created to shine a light on the confluence between capitalism and female self-esteem. In the 1970s, the average age that women started dieting was FOURTEEN. By 1990 it was EIGHT. And it hasn’t improved since.

When I was in high school, I counted every calorie that entered my mouth. I got up at 5 am to work out before school. I was consumed with thoughts of food and my body.  Sadly, there isn’t one scapegoat we can blame for this issue. We have the media, parents, and peers, but I think the deepest (hardest to solve) reason is that women are born with intrinsic self-hatred. Trauma passed down through the millennia has seeped into our DNA.

And now, I would argue that the diet industry and all corners of capitalism profit heavily from exploiting self-hatred and low self-esteem. Even when trying to look “empowering.” I mentioned this is a comedy, right? I hope you enjoy our film!” —Emily McGregor

Edge Three – “Fragile Storm”

CAREGIVING – (Drama) A young woman goes to extreme lengths to escape the clutches of a terrifying older man, only to discover the heartbreaking truth about who she is and why she’s really there. Starring Lance Henriksen.

“FRAGILE STORM was created to highlight the duality of caregiving. Most often, stories like this are told from the perspective of the person suffering from the illness, rather than the caregiver.

What I wanted to do here was show both sides. Alzheimer’s is now the seventh leading cause of death in this country, only to be moved from sixth position in 2020 due to COVID-19, which contributed to a 17% increase in Alzheimer’s and dementia deaths.

As horrific as this illness is, the stress, anxiety and struggles that caregivers endure is equally as devastating.” —Dawn Fields

Edge Four – “Utopia”

SELF-ACCEPTANCE – (Drama) A young lesbian, struggling to come out to her mother, learns a valuable lesson about the misguided notion that ‘the grass is always greener on the other side”.

“UTOPIA is a film about self-acceptance. It explores how far-reaching societal standards are on what’s acceptable and what’s taboo and encourages everyone to accept themselves in spite of these standards.” –Aimiende Negbenebor Sela

Edge Five – “Over The Moon”

FANTASY VS. REALITY – (Romance/Comedy) Mariela has visions, and not always the pleasant kind. Her world is turned upside down when she meets Django, a man who seems to defy gravity, and who is not afraid to hunker down in the trenches and figure it out with her.

“OVER THE MOON was written over a weekend, curled up in front of the coffee table. I was in love and I needed to express how unreal and magical it was to share a world with someone that had so recently felt mine alone. Often we believe we aren’t healthy enough or beautiful enough or sane enough to love and be loved. Over The Moon challenges that notion.

We all have our quirks, whether they have long scientific-sounding names for specific disorders or can be summed up as “messycook” or “grumpypants.” We are never going to be cured or perfect and then “find” love. Instead we have to be brave enough to share our inner worlds, even if it is a risk.

I wrote parkour into the script because I wanted to use it to visually represent the outer reaches of what’s humanly possible or believable, and the parallels between physical and emotional risks. Making the film on a shoestring budget with a skeleton crew was a challenge, but we did it for the love. And I must say – it was worth it.”Jade Raybin

Edge Six – “Count Back From Ten”

MIND OVER MATTER: (Fantasy/Drama) A young girl harnesses the power of imagination in order to escape her heartbreaking reality.

“COUNT BACK FROM TEN is a family collaboration.

The film stars my niece, Claire Dauge-Roth, and was made with the help of my husband, who production designed, and my in-laws, who played the doctor and nurse.

Lensed by Emily Topper on a island off the wilds of the Maine coast, the story was born from a discussion with Claire about how children deal with trauma in their own secret and magical ways.

This film is a tribute to the power of overcoming obstacles through imagination.” –Tamar Halpern

Edge Seven – “Uncertainship”

SUSPICION – (Fantasy/Comedy/Drama) A young woman’s deepest relationship fears and insecurities come to life.

“With UNCERTAINSHIP, I wanted to dive into the world of relationship insecurities at its many levels. But, you know, in a fun way.” —Amanda Hinkley

Edge Eight – “Mermaid”

TRANS YOUTH BULLYING – (Drama) A deep connection is forged when a ten-year-old boy, struggling with his gender, crosses paths with an unraveling, grief-stricken drag queen.

“I wrote MERMAID in order to help protect at-risk trans youth who are currently under attack by over 240 anti LGBTQ+ laws.

It is my hope and my mission to bring awareness and change to conservative communities throughout the United States regarding how they are treating LGBTQ + youth and their families.–Fia Perera
